5 reasons why your next breakfast should be at The Claw

1. They serve cereal! All those American favorites comes together in one place with a choice or full fat, semi skim, soy, almond or rice milk. Think Reeses Puff’s, Trix and Lucky Charms. (Although the latter was not available on my visit)

2. The menu is so BIG that it caters for everyone. Vegetarian? No problems. Gluten free? There’s something for you.

3. Bottomless (black) coffee – These two words are music to coffee drinkers ears and so typically American too!

4. They serve chicken for breakfast! I had the Redneck which is two poached eggs on top of two buttermilk chicken pieces with a super generous portion of breakfast potatoes. Super delicious with a zingy hollandiase sauce. You can also order chicken & waffles.

5. You can have fun for free! They have arcade machines on free play and a jukebox as well as multiple TV screens showing American sports.

The service at Claw is always friendly and the atmosphere is very relaxed and casual.

Unfortunately breakfast won’t be served again until after Ramadan so you’ll have a few more weeks to wait.

Also, breakfast is only served on the weekends; Fridays from 8am til 12pm & Saturdays from 8am til 2pm.

Logma – A traditional twist!

Samer and Elias have created something special, popular with the locals and the expats alike. Traditional influence with a modern take, Logma pleases the taste buds of many. Logma meaning ‘bites’ in Arabic serves Emirati cuisine.

People like myself keep returning as a need to satisfy my Logma fries craving. The flavor explosion in your mouth of the mixture of khaleeji herbs & spices and the crispiness of each fry mean they are totally addictive. You won’t be able to stop eating them. Don’t just take my word for it, read Baggage and Dish blog post here.

After entering the restaurant you notice the modern take on traditional decor with hanging lanterns, palm leaves and camel print, which sets the feel of the restaurant and cuisine to come. The team at Logma always make you feel welcomed.
I’ve tried a selection of their mocktails before. Desert Oasis, Passion of Arabia, Berry Blast & Atlantis. Out of them all, I was a fan of the Berry Blast as it is quite sour but also quenches your thirst. On my recent visit I opted for the iced karak which is overly sweet.

This time round I was here in time to try out some breakfast items which included a beef shakshouka, an egg paratha roll and also the emirati speciality, balaleet, which is sweetened vermicelli noodles served with omelette pieces. The shakshouka wasn’t as spicy as I hoped and the egg paratha was very comforting yet filling.

IMG_7405Logma offer a great selection of salads including the popular pomegranate mozzarella salad which is a personal favorite as I love the mixture of textures and flavors.IMG_7412As we were here around the brunch time we also got to try the talked about chicken wings. Now these may be the smallest wings I’ve ever seen but again the way they are coated, deep fried and rolled in that special mix of khaleeji spices they are up there with one of my favorites.

The beef sandwich is also a repeat order for me. Layers and layers of warm sliced beef tucked inside a khameer with a mixture of herbs and tomato slices. Although the slight citrus punch which I had previously tasted was missing, it’s still one very tasty sandwich indeed.

Although we passed on dessert on my most recent visit, the Lugaimat is not to be missed. Served with your choice of nutella or traditional date syrup you can’t stop yourself from eating these donut balls. If you’re after some coffee to help you digest then the Saudi coffee is lighter in color and in taste than the traditional Emirati coffee.494

493I can understand why Logma is one of the most popular restaurants in the Box Park area, it creates an addiction and craving like no other.

Logma is located in Box Park on Al Wasl Rd but you’ll also find a pop up store at Ripe Markets, Zabeel Park in the winter.495Here’s hoping to more branches soon and also a delivery service!

Tapas brunch @ The Huddle, Bur Dubai

It was back in February that a Tapas style brunch was launched at The Huddle and for just 99AED per person for a mix of bite sized eats and beverages I can understand why this place is popular.

The Huddle Bur Dubai (4)

IMG_8807It’s not only a sports bar, showing various games over a big and subsequent smaller screens and walls lined with sporting memorabilia, there’s also a live singer/guitarist playing a mix of cover songs from the 80’s 90’s and 00’s.IMG_8811The food is kept in one corner and consists of hot dishes, think Paella through to Roast meats, chicken wings, cold salads and open face sandwiches, cheeses, cold meats, a plethora of olives and last but not least a decent spread of individually portioned desserts.IMG_8780IMG_8790IMG_8791IMG_8797IMG_8801The roast meats I tried tasted great but were a little on the cold side while the chicken wings remained most popular and kept on being replenished rather quickly therefore remaining warm. The pepita de ternea (open face sandwich) was on super fresh bread with tasty toppings both veg and non veg option (slices of beef tenderloin, piquillo peppers drizzled with manchengo cheese). There’s definitely enough options there for everyone.IMG_8784IMG_8789IMG_8794The desserts I wasn’t particularly fond of as none stood out in terms of taste. I think they could benefit from an ice cream cart with various toppings as an alternative to all the cakes and puddings.IMG_8778The seating is either low level leather seats or high bar stools and tables. You can specify your preferred option upon booking.

The drinks service is efficient with each group of tables having a dedicated waitress looking after them.

Only downfall for me is the indoor smoking which I personally don’t agree with but despite that there is still a good atmosphere and mixed crowd. A great place for that relaxed Friday brunch vibe.

NB. The Tapas Brunch is now on hold until after Ramadan and will resume on 8th July 2016

Dancing @ Dusty’s, DIFC

A welcome invite from my friend G saw myself and the squad hit up Dusty’s on a Wednesday evening. The electic decor and uber cool vibes were the first to catch my attention.IMG_6581The low level tables along the wall are cosy and romantic with a water feature view to add to the ambiance. I could of sworn the DJ was playing my iPod at one stage with a whole heap of 90’s tunes from hip hop to RnB and even the legendary Michael Jackson was thrown into the mix. The only thing missing is a dance floor, which resulted in me doing karaoke and chair dancing much to my friends amusement.IMG_6564The Wednesday night brunch deal (from 6-10pm) see’s you get an unlimited amount of small plates (from a choice of 11) as well as unlimited beverages for just 200AED. Such a steal! The highlight for me being the crunchy lobster tacos loaded with guacamole.

The food service although perhaps slow at times, which could be due to multiple orders at a time, was worth the wait with the small plates we had as starters impressing our taste buds.

As we are here for a tasting evening we are allowed to sample the main menu which sees us ordering two pastas, a mild linguine amatriciana and a mushroom penne which could of had a bit more creamy sauce, extremely flavorful and tender Korean spiced lamb chops, the melt-in-your-mouth black cod with a green chili & mango salsa with a side of crunchy truffle fries.

The beverages on offer include house wines, of which i sampled the rose which was sweet on my palette. The bottled beer included was peroni.IMG_6563We’re pretty stuffed come dessert time so only order the one to share, a round french toast topped with vanilla ice cream and a not so generous serving of caramel sauce.IMG_6584To our surprise they also bought us the candy station. A chocolate fondue set complete with cake pops, macarons, churros, fruit & candy. As I found the french toast to be a little dry, dipping into the fondue was the perfect solution!IMG_6583Not only could I not stop chair dancing the entire evening, my taste buds were also dancing with delight. They also have an outdoor area with a water feature which they use for ladies night.

Needless to say I’m looking forward to my next Dusty’s experience.

Brunch with Superheros @ Mazina

Don’t put away your comic con costume just yet. Mazina in the Address Hotel Dubai Marina have recently launched a Saturday Superhero themed brunch. Aimed at the kiddies with a dedicated kids’ room complete with jumping castle, magician and self serve food. No one will judge you if you rock up as Super woman, in fact it’s encouraged.

The staff are welcoming upon arrival and show us to our table. There’s the option of also eating on the outside balcony too whilst the weather is still nice. It’s actually more peaceful out there too.

I take a wander around to see what’s on offer before grabbing a plate and tucking in. I notice a cereal station. I’m not sure why anyone would eat this considering the brunch starts at 12:30pm and most people would of had breakfast at home.

I always like to start a brunch with seafood. There was a nice selection of fresh seafood as well as four types of sushi, raw octopus and also salmon and tuna sashimi.

There was no signs on some of the food, which is OK as most stations are manned so you could just ask the friendly staff however signage on all of the food would definitely help especially for the unmanned stations.

The amuse bouche served on ceramic spoons were delightful each with their own mix of flavors.IMG_5723Mocktails – The virgin pina colada and mojito were okay but we preferred the taste of the Summer fizz.IMG_5722There was a pork charcuterie station, a cheese station and a healthy station consisting of fresh salads and juice shots.IMG_5685There was also Indian & Chinese cuisines on offer with one my favorites – dumplings.IMG_5694Although the braised chicken in black bean sauce stole the show. IMG_5739Brunch isn’t complete with a selection of hot roasts. Mazina’s selection includes: Roast Beef, Roast Turkey, Roast Chicken and Roast Pork complete with vegetables and of course Yorkshire puddings. Don’t forget to add the lashings of gravy. However after trying the Roast Pork and the Pork Loin they were both a little too dry for me. The Turkey was the highlight.IMG_5700You could also choose from super tender lamb shanks, pan cooked salmon or seafood paella.

IMG_5699IMG_5702Our tables were cleared quite quickly most of the time with only once we reached back to find a plate still there. That’s quite good considering we went through 5 rounds.

For desserts there was plenty of options but I limited myself to just a few as I was seriously struggling by this point to fit any more in.IMG_5715IMG_5710IMG_5712You can choose from individual portions of desserts, a slice of a full sized cake or tart, a spoonful of hot puddings like Um Ali or drizzle some fruit pieces in the chocolate fountains. The choice is endless and totally yours. I stuck with a choc brownie dipped in more chocolate (totally guilt worthy but worth it), a scoop of bread & butter pudding, a mango pudding and a date and caramel pudding as well as a latte to help me digest it all.IMG_5748The vibe is a very relaxed with a family friendly casual dining atmosphere. More of a buffet lunch than your typical boozy brunch that you might find elsewhere. That’s not to say alcohol isn’t available. There’s a fully stocked bar.

Overall for the price it’s quite reasonable and has a decent variety although not OTT. It’s not overly crowded either so you’ll face zero queues at the buffet. What’s great is the soft package brunch includes water, soft drinks, mocktails and tea and coffee! Not bad at all.

Hypnothaised @ Thiptara

Hypnothai brunch at Thiptara located inside the Palace Downtown is new to the brunch scene having only launched a few weeks earlier.IMG_4929IMG_4931Surrounded by water of the Dubai Fountains and most famously the Burj Khalifa the location is second to none. Some might even say it’s hypno-THAI-sing. 😛IMG_4938IMG_4952The resident DJ set’s the vibe for the day spinning house tunes all afternoon whilst the staff were a little MIA in terms of showing guests what’s on offer.

There’s around 40 of us dining as a big group courtesy of Zomato for another #ZomatoMeetup. Taking this into consideration the staff numbers should of matched the guest ratio. The food on offer is in just the one room and is Thai cuisine only.IMG_4933We start with a range of appetizers including scallops, chicken satay and dim sum as well as a fragrant chicken and coconut soup.

IMG_5010IMG_5007IMG_4973There’s also a range of Thai salads, some of which are made to order by the staff using fresh ingredients.

IMG_4943IMG_4944IMG_4945IMG_4956For drinks there is a selection of fresh made juices, coconuts, sangria and cider on offer as well as red and white wines and beers which are ordered via the staff. I was excited to pick up and sip on a fresh coconut but was concerned to find that it was empty. My friend had the same experience. Not sure if someone had already drunk it and returned it or if these two coconuts had holes in the bottom of them. Either way it was strange. What I did love was the white wine sangria, the fruit punch and the refreshing cucumber soda which is actually made the connecting bar, Fai.IMG_4979IMG_4955

Mains consisted of stir fry wagyu beef, green chicken curry and wok fried Canadian lobster, served with an endless offering of Jasmine steamed rice and a side of Phad Se Eiw Gai and some mixed stir fry vegetablesThe beef, chicken and lobster dishes were all executed very well with the juicy lobster pieces being my favorite in a black pepper and onion sauce. The Phad Se Eiw Gai was perfectly sticky however I didn’t like the sauce they used as it was too bland for my palette. I would of liked to of seen a Pad Thai option as well.

There’s no denying the food quality is of a high standard, if only they had the service to match. I found throughout the duration of brunch there was a massive gap of at least a metre wide where no food was being put on our table. It was concentrated at the ends of the table which meant we (my friend and I) were missing out on trying some of the dishes. I had to ask and order this separately just so we could try some of them.

The Thai desserts were impressive both visually and taste wise with the highlight being the Khao Neaw Mamueng aka Mango sticky rice. There was also a lot of exotic Thai fruits on offer.

I’d love to go back again in a smaller group so I could taste the things I missed as even though the spread looks quite small there is quite a lot on offer. If you’re a Thai fan then you would definitely enjoy it.

Hypothai is a very affordable brunch at just 260dhs with soft beverages, 320dhs with house beverages and 390dhs with the bubbly package. Being a new brunch, I’ll let the service slide this time round and hopefully on my next visit it’s vastly improved.

Yum Cha @ The China Club

The China Club has been on my foodie hit list pretty much since I moved to Dubai nearly two years ago. For me, Yum Cha or Dim Sum (as some may call it) was a ritual with my family and eventually friends too, so much so that I started my own Yum Cha Club which entailed monthly meetings held at various yum cha places around Sydney.

Two years later I’m still on the hunt for the best Yum Cha restaurant in Dubai.  So one sunny Friday morning we arranged a small gathering and 4 of us set off to Radisson Blu in Baniyas to see what all the fuss was about.

We arrive at the hotel and walk down some long halls before finding The China Club. Tucked away in the corner, there was no one to greet us as we entered. There are two private dining areas on either side before we reached the main dining area which isn’t overly big by any means but had very formal classic decor.

IMG_3188I secretly wish we had a bigger group so we sit at a table with a lazy susan but I’m happy we got seated in a booth which is great for small talk.

IMG_3217The waiter explained the Friday brunch deal to us and then took our drink orders. For a set price of 139AED per person you get an array of fried and steamed dim sum, tea, soft drinks and iced tea, starters consisting of salads and soups, as well as mains of noodles and rice and last but not least, dessert! Phew. Make sure you go with an appetite.

We started with delicious hot soups. I had the chicken & corn soup which was fragrant and enjoyable but I didn’t want to fill up on soup as I wanted to leave space for lots of dumplings.

IMG_3192IMG_3194The steamed dim sum were my favorite and I particularly liked the freshness of the dumplings. The har gow was perfectly sticky and you could tell everything was made fresh in house. This is probably the most authentic tasting dumplings I’ve had in Dubai other than Din Tai Fung.

IMG_3196IMG_3206IMG_3203IMG_3207We went through a few rounds of steamed dumplings, making sure not to eat too many fried ones as they fill you up too much and then decided to try some crispy noodles for mains. I enjoyed the crunchy texture of the crispy noodles but they were nearly impossible to eat with chopsticks.

Crispy noodles

I asked to order some chicken wings as it was the only thing off the steamed dim sum trolley we didn’t try but unfortunately they don’t serve them anymore and just haven’t updated the menu since. So we moved onto dessert. Red bean paste sesame balls which were a favorite amongst my friends as well as some puddings, (mango with strawberries was my fav) and vanilla ice cream with lychee. By this stage we were bursting at the seams.

Chinese Jasmine Tea

The service could of been better considering the restaurant wasn’t overly full. We mentioned this to the manager on duty who apologized and assured us next time it wouldn’t happen.IMG_3187This is the only restaurant I’ve found so far serving dim sum out of trolleys like back home. The price is great value and you’ll definitely leave with a full belly. The only thing missing is the pork.

Brunching at Giardino, Palazzo Versace

Versace, Versace, Versace, Versace.

Drake raps about it. J-Lo wears it. I however, got to dine at it. The Giardino brunch that is, located inside the fairly new Palazzo Versace hotel. The hotel, has only been open for a few months and the brunch has only in operation for a few weeks.

Giardino, meaning Garden it Italian, is a restaurant decorated like the dress J-Lo wore to Grammy’s in 2000. View it here. Green Versace Dress From the walls, to the furniture and even the staff uniforms are made with this green leafy pattern hence creating an optical illusion.

I was privileged to be dining with a group of around 20 foodies for another #ZomatoMeetup event. Upon arrival we were greeted with a glass of champagne and a tour of the restaurant.

I roamed around to take some photos and view what food stations were on offer. I was particularly impressed with the food art made out of chocolate into beautiful sculptures including the leaning tower of Pisa and the Colosseum.

The DJ spun some great disco and house tunes throughout the day which made us want to get up and boogie however there is no set dance floor. The atmosphere is light, bright and breezy as the surrounding doors are open out onto the outdoor terrace and pool area.

You can help yourself to the various food stations or you can use cards with your table number and have the staff bring your plates directly to your table.

IMG_3899Giardino has a pasta cart…

Simple but delicious – The spaghetti with pecorino cheese, black pepper and crunchy dried artichokes

An ice cream cart…

and a cocktail cart which all arrive at your table during your brunch visit.

I found the salad station to be a bit boring and lacking any real variety. The seafood option however was aplenty. The grilled lobster was the highlight for me. So fresh and flavorsome. If only they offered more grilled seafood, for example prawns and perhaps some oysters kilpatrick. They also have a cheese and foie gras section offering an impressive foie gras creme brulee.

We were also brought various dishes to try at our table, which included loads of Indian fare.

However I found the Italian food the tastiest. In particular the gnocchi in mushroom sauce which almost made soup like and better eaten with a spoon. Rich, creamy and delicate.

IMG_3886As well as these stuffed pasta bites filled with cheese and topped with tomato sauce and drizzled with balsamic.

IMG_3889Post mains we sat back and enjoyed some desserts which were served to our table. They ranged from Indian sweets to a selection of pastries, cakes and treats. What would brunch be without us foodies playing with food and taking some funny photos. See Gaganjeet from Baggage and Dish below with his gulab jamun for eyeballs. Favorites for me included the chocolate brownie and chocolate mousse.

What better way to digest all the food than with a nice cup of green tea presented in this gorgeous Versace gold detailed teacup.

All brunch guests get free pool access as well as going into a draw to win a nights stay for 2 at the hotel including breakfast. Not a bad deal. You can see the winners announced on their twitter account.

There are multiple pools on the premises with one being an infinity pool but it’s missing a decent view.

I expected better service but it’s still early days. I’ve given feedback to the management team so hopefully with some tweaks it will improve going forward.

The location is a little out of the way compared to other Friday brunches but the roads were quiet and it’s easy to find.

Overall, Giardino brunch has a great atmosphere and impresses with it’s seafood offerings and well executed Italian.

Bookings are essential. Call 04 4371640.

Brasserie Quartier – A French fairy tale

Once upon a time in Downtown Dubai, way back in 2015, the grand manor that is the St. Regis was built. This brand new premises is spectacular by day but even more so if you arrive in the evening. The furnishings will speak for themselves, gorgeous marbled stairs, giant chandeliers; the St. Regis oozes luxury.

Take the lift or the stairs to the first floor and you will find the new French restaurant ~ Brasserie Quartier.

An invite reached the hands of a few selected foodies to attend ‘Brunch at the Manor’ hosted by Zomato and St. Regis for another #ZomatoMeetup.

The stylish affair was kicked off with a welcome drink from the cart at the restaurant’s entrance.

The live in house band started playing some jazz cover songs which added to the elegant ambiance of the brunch whilst the foodies sipped on some specialty cocktails.

The Parisian Punch with Absyinthe has a nice kick to it

Unlike other brunches in Dubai, The BQ’s brunch offers a seated service where various courses are brought directly to your table. Although if you wish to leave your seat you can also help yourself from the various stations including seafood, cheese, bread and cold cuts.

Cold cuts & foie gras

A selection of canapes including snails beignet and croquette fingers
The fresh seafood platter

The foie gras was by far the best I’ve ever tasted. Rich, creamy and moreish accompanied by a sweet homemade cranberry jam. Delicious!

Port & cheese pairing was provided by Chef Sofiane himself. Just mention what type of cheese you like and he’ll serve you up a generous plate full to try, along with a matching port.

A selection of salads including a fabulous truffle labneh

I think by this stage and a few drinks later we forgot that we still had mains to come. The carving carts soon arrived at our table. The rib eye steak was seasoned perfectly and the roast duck breast was cooked just right. The creamy truffle mash was just divine.

The carving station; Beef Rib Eye on the bone, Roast Chicken and Roast Duck Breast

We enjoyed a palate cleanser of lemon sorbet served with either vodka or bubbly before moving into the patisserie for dessert. This is where you can help yourself to the chocolate fountain, sweet display, fairy floss and popcorn cart whilst the staff are on hand waiting to serve you gelato with your choice of toppings or a variety of in house made chocolates, pastries and cakes.

Dark, milk and white chocolate fountain

Sweet corner
A selection of treats

This is probably one of the best brunches I’ve been to in terms of the food quality. A commendable variety of well executed gourmet food on offer and a great selection of beverages too. I love the idea of the table side service which means you aren’t constantly up and down you can enjoy the live entertainment and be social rather than queuing in buffet lines. I’d also recommend dressing up for this one.

The non-alcoholic brunch is 450AED

Brunch with wines, beers and bubbly is 550AED

Bollinger brunch is 650AED

Country Charm at The Croft

When opportunity knocks, you must answer the door. That’s exactly what Darren Velvick did when Marriott offered him the chance to take over the 5th floor restaurant (previously AZUR) within Dubai Marriott Harbour in the heart of Dubai Marina. The Croft is Darren’s new restaurant which sees his name up in lights and unlike most chefs which have their name behind the restaurants, you will actually find Darren working in the kitchen.

He’s worked with some of the world’s best chefs including Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing but wanting to steer clear from the fine dining scene, Darren was keen to bring a more down to earth concept into the Marina. Enter The Croft. A casual dining restaurant serving British cuisine inspired from his upbringings in Berkshire, England.

It was such a pleasure to actually meet the Chef and brainchild behind The Croft, Darren Velvick. Working alongside is his super friendly protege and restaurant manager Jane it made for one of the most memorable #zomatomeetups to date.

Upon entering the premises you are instantly relaxed by the rustic décor which provides a classic countryside charm. As a welcome drink we were served a pomegranatini; a mocktail made with pomegranate lime and ginger with a tingling sweet taste.

Inside the venue glass screens were removed from the old AZUR space to create an open view kitchen and more rustic touches were added like wood paneling and giant chalkboard pieces and pendant lights. I loved the glass roof panels above the dining area which relays ample natural light although it can prove challenging for the food photographers.

The outdoor garden area has picnic style seats as well as bean bags and sun deck chairs and a wooden gin bar as well as artificial grass, flowers in watering cans and panoramic views of the Dubai Marina.

Darren loves to use local farmers and locally sourced ingredients and organic produce where possible. He is very sustainable and nothing goes to waste in his kitchen. Even the unused parts of the chicken are kept for making sauces etc.

As Darren talked, we ate, starting with wooden boards of appetizers including: mini fish cakes, devilled chicken skewers ( spicy & delicious), crispy mushrooms as well as scones with goats cheese, beetroot and walnuts (personal fav) and deep fried prawns with a sesame vinegar soy dipping sauce (divine).

Darren then got to work to show us how to pipe a bird. Rather than stuff the insides, he creates a pocket under the chicken skin with his fingers and then uses a piping bag to insert the combination mix of butter, crumbs, foie gras and truffle. He then gives us a demonstration on how to truss a bird before preparing the sides that we will have with our roasted organic chicken.

For the sides we had a risotto with mascarpone cheese, parmesan cheese, wilted spinach, charred corn kernels and buttered button mushrooms. Such a hearty meal, boasting with aromas and flavors. I’ll be coming back for this particular dish alone.

No #zomatomeetup would be complete without dessert. Darren set us a challenge to plate our own dessert with half of the foodies creating an eton mess or as Darren has cleverly renamed it to ‘Neat & Tidy’ and the other half plating up the peanut choc-ice dessert. Everyone added their own flair and it was nice to be able to get hands on for some friendly competition.

The neat & tidy was piped with an elderflower cream and decorated with raspberry sauce, fresh raspberries, gin and elderflower jelly as well as fresh mint. A lovely combination of flavors and textures.

As a special treat to @dxbfooddiaries we all sang Happy Birthday as Darren had secretly arranged a chocolate fondant cake for the birthday girl.

I learnt so much tips & tricks from Darren about cooking that I can’t wait to try them out at home and I especially adore the Croft apron we received in our Zomato goody bags. Big props to Pallavi, Eshne and the Zomato team for the invitation and organizing such a memorable event.

So if you’re looking for a fun, relaxed environment with some great British grub, head on over to The Croft and you’ll see Darren and the team in action.

I’m already looking forward to my next visit.
